What does an SEO retainer cost in South Africa?
SEO retainer pricing in South Africa, and what the money should buy
A monthly SEO retainer in South Africa typically costs between R3,500 and R15,000. Ours is R8,700 a month with a three-month start, covering a keyword and competitor map, technical SEO monitoring, a content production cadence, a monthly strategy call and reporting tied to enquiries. Anything much cheaper is usually a reporting subscription: tooling and a PDF, with no work in it. Judge a retainer by what gets produced each month, not by how nice the report looks.
What the price is actually paying for
There are three kinds of work inside SEO, and a retainer that does not name all three is doing one or two of them. Technical work: the site has to be crawlable, fast, structurally sensible, and free of the errors that stop pages being indexed. Content work: pages that answer the questions people actually search for, written well enough to be worth reading. Authority work: other sites linking to you, listings, and being mentioned.
A retainer that only does technical work will produce a report full of green ticks and no movement. A retainer that only produces content on a site nobody can crawl will produce content nobody sees. You need all three, in a sequence, and the sequence is why a three-month minimum exists.
How to tell a real retainer from a reporting subscription
Ask three questions. First: what will be produced and published in month one, specifically? If the answer is an audit and a strategy, that is fine for month one, but ask what month two produces. Second: who writes the content, and is it included in the price or billed separately? Third: what happens if it does not work? A retainer with no exit is a subscription to a service that is not working.
Then look at what the report measures. If it reports impressions, domain authority and keyword positions, and never reports enquiries, it is measuring the means and not the end. Our reporting is tied to leads because leads are the only number that pays for the retainer.
How long before it shows
Three months is the honest minimum, and it is not a marketing line. Search results are a ranking of what already exists. In month one you learn what is technically broken and what to write. In month two the work goes live and starts being crawled. In month three you get the first signal about whether it is moving. Anything that claims visible movement in four weeks is either already ranking for something and taking credit for it, or is lying.
For a site that is new, or badly built, expect the technical fixes to show faster than the content. For a site in a competitive SA niche, expect the content to be the thing that decides whether it works at all.
When a retainer is the wrong answer
If the site is slow, broken, or does not convert, fix that first. Sending traffic to a page that loses most of it is paying to fill a leaking bucket. If you have no idea what you sell or who you sell to, no amount of content will fix that either, and we will say so on the call rather than billing for it.
Questions people ask about this
What does your SEO retainer cost?
R8,700 a month, with a three-month start so the compounding has time to show. It includes the keyword and competitor map, technical monitoring, a content cadence, a monthly strategy call, and reporting tied to leads.
Why a three-month minimum?
Because search results rank things that already exist. Month one is diagnosis and technical repair, month two is production and crawling, month three is the first real signal. A one-month retainer buys the diagnosis and then stops.
Can I cancel?
Yes. The three-month start is the commitment; after that you can move to a Care Plan or stop. We would rather you stay because it is working than because you are locked in.
Do you do SEO for Shopify or WordPress sites?
Yes. Technical constraints differ by platform, and we will tell you which changes are possible on yours before promising them.
