How fast should a website be on South African mobile networks?

Website speed in South Africa: what a page has to do on a real phone

The short answer

For South African mobile traffic, aim for a Largest Contentful Paint under 2.5 seconds on a mid-range Android phone over 4G, Cumulative Layout Shift under 0.1, and Interaction to Next Paint under 200 milliseconds. The number that matters is not your office fibre result, it is a mid-range phone on congested LTE, because that is where most of your visitors are. The three fixes that move it most are resizing and compressing images, removing third-party scripts that are not earning their place, and serving HTML that already contains the content.

Why the South African number is different

Two things change the target here. The first is that a large share of business website traffic arrives on a phone over mobile data, not on wifi, and mobile data is expensive. A visitor on a data bundle is spending money to load your page. A 4 MB homepage is not just slow, it costs somebody something.

The second is load-shedding and its aftermath. Networks degrade during and after outages, and a site that only performs well on a clean fibre line is not performing well in the conditions your customers actually experience. Test in the area they live in, at the time of day they are browsing.

The three numbers to hold yourself to

Largest Contentful Paint under 2.5 seconds. This is how long until the biggest thing on the screen — usually the hero image or the headline — is visible. If it is over 2.5 seconds, most of the improvement is in how that one element is loaded, not in the rest of the page.

Cumulative Layout Shift under 0.1. This is the page jumping around while it loads: text moving, buttons sliding out from under a finger. The two usual causes are web fonts swapping in and images with no declared size. Both are fixable with a few lines.

Interaction to Next Paint under 200 milliseconds. This is how long the page takes to respond when somebody taps. It is the metric that makes a site feel broken, and it is usually caused by too much JavaScript doing work on the main thread.

The fixes, in the order that pays

Start with images. Most slow pages are slow because a 3,000-pixel photograph was sent to a 400-pixel slot. Serve the size you need, in a modern format, with width and height declared so the browser can reserve the space before the file arrives. This one change frequently moves LCP by more than a second.

Then remove third-party scripts that are not earning their place. Chat widgets, tag managers, heatmaps, A/B tools and two analytics packages doing the same job. Every one of them runs on the main thread and competes with your content for the visitor’s attention.

Then serve content in the HTML. If a crawler, or an AI answer engine, receives an empty page and has to run JavaScript to see your copy, you have made your own content harder to read for the machines that decide whether you get found. Prerendering the pages is not a trick; it is just not hiding your content from people who cannot run your code.

Then self-host your fonts and preload the one that sets the size of your headline.

Questions people ask about this

What is a good PageSpeed score in South Africa?

Ignore the score and read the metrics. Aim for LCP under 2.5 seconds, CLS under 0.1 and INP under 200 ms on a mid-range Android phone over 4G. A 95 score on desktop over fibre tells you almost nothing about your real visitors.

Does a slow website actually lose customers?

Yes, and it loses them before your copy is read. A page that takes six seconds to become usable on a phone loses most of the people who arrived at it, and they never see the thing you wanted to show them.

Can you fix a slow site without rebuilding it?

Often yes. Image sizing, script removal, caching rules and font handling are all changes to an existing site. A rebuild is the expensive answer to a problem that is frequently a few specific files.
